Welcome to Japan Flat Sarah! ! !

My cousin Sarah and her first grade class are taking part in the Flat Stanly Project. The idea derived from a 1964 children’s book where Stanley, the main character, is smashed by a falling bulletin board and forced to live the remainder of his life flattened. Determined to make the best out of his situation he realizes that as Flat Stanly he can do many things that he couldn’t do before. He embarks upon many exciting adventures and soon finds out that being flat isn’t so bad after all. Do you want to know how the story ends? Well, I can’t tell you that, but what I can tell you is that this story is will not let you down. . . "but you don’t have to take my word for it.” To find out for yourself all the adventures Flat Stanley embarks upon then go to your local library and check this book out as soon as you can! “I’ll see you next time.” (Ahem. – LeVar Burton, Reading Rainbow)

It wasn’t until 1995 that Dale Hubert, a Canadian school teacher created the Flat Stanley Project. Information taken from Wikipeida does a great job breaking down the basics:

The Flat Stanley Project provides an opportunity for students to make connections with students [. . .] [friends, or family.] First, they make paper "Flat Stanleys" (or pictures of the Stanley Lambchop character [or flat versions of themselves]) and keep a journal for a few days, documenting the places and activities in which Flat Stanley is involved. The Flat Stanley and the journal are then mailed to other people who are asked to treat the figure as a visiting guest and add to his journal, then return them both after a period of time. (Wikipedia)

When my lil cuz Sarah asked me to help her out with her Flat Sarah Project I jumped at the opportunity. I must confess that I wasn’t at the door to greet Flat Sarah when she arrived. Actually, I was at work and because the mail man doesn’t like to leave packages unattended at the front door he left me a note in my mail box and took Flat Sarah back to the post office. I feel really bad about what happened next, but because I didn’t make it home from work in time to get to the post office before it closed Flat Sarah had to spend her first night in Nagashima alone in a cold and dark scary place.

In the morning I immediately went to meet her when the doors opened and although she was a little upset she didn’t hold a grudge. Last night we out for dinner and today I took her to school. We’re having a great time together in Japan!
