Nagashima Art Festival
This year there were 106 different entries registered in the Nagashima Art Festival, one of the most exciting and anticipated events to take place on the island. This biennial festival includes just about everyone as schools, community organizations, town offices, and local business compete against one another hoping to build the best art project.
Everything from statues of characters, people, automobiles, animals and buildings can be found at the festival. However, anything is fair game just as long as a few simple rules are followed. First of all, the project should be big and strong. Basically, it needs to be durable enough to withstand harsh weather conditions as it is to be displayed outdoors. Next, using recycled items such as empty cans and PET bottles or items from nature such as bamboo, shells, tree branches, and wood is a must. The Japanese love to recycle. Finally, it should be original. The competition is really tough as endless hours are dedicated to working on each individual project.
Once all of the projects have been built they then transported to the same place for viewing. Walking through and looking at each of the different group's work is incredible. It's almost as exciting as Disney Land! Take a look at the sideshow below and judge for yourself.
