Magician’s magic is in conning restaurants, then disappearing
Date Posted: 2007-12-14
The latest incident Sunday had the man eat a ¥5,000 meal, then tell other customers “I’m a magician and would like to show my magic. Can I borrow ¥10,000 yen in paper money?” People gave him ¥30,000, and he went through the motion of performing. Suddenly, he declared “Oh, sorry, I can’t” and then raced out of the restaurant.
The staff, expecting their ¥30,000 to be returned, was stunned and immediately called police, but it was too late. The magician was successful in disappearing. Police say they’ve no idea where he went.
Police say they think all con incidents were by the same man. In each case, he ordered food and went through his routine. His highest food bill at one restaurant was ¥10,000. Officers say the man is a criminal, and vow they will catch him. (link)
FreeRice has two goals:
1. Provide English vocabulary to everyone for free.
2. Help end world hunger by providing rice to hungry people for free.
This is made possible by the sponsors who advertise on this site. Whether you are CEO of a large corporation or a street child in a poor country, improving your vocabulary can improve your life. It is a great investment in yourself. Perhaps even greater is the investment your donated rice makes in hungry human beings, enabling them to function and be productive. Somewhere in the world, a person is eating rice that you helped provide. Thank you.
"Good Friends are like stars. You don’t always see them,
but you know they are always there."
I recently had the opportunity to purchase a Little Traveler from a friend of mine and since I liked the idea of it so much I promised to spread the word. Little Travelers are hand crafted pins and key chains made by HIV /AIDS infected/affected families in Woza Moya, South Africa . Through the support of HIllcrest AIDS Center, a non profit organization, low income families are able to distribute and sell Little Travelers to others across the world. This unique self help program provides a tremendous opportunity for these families to generate a self sustainable income. Anyone interested in their very own Little Traveler let me know and I'll pick one up for you. They cost 600 yen or $5.50.
